Who can apply as a foreign student?
To apply as a foreign student, the student must meet the following requirements:
- Undergraduate degree awarded (or expected) by a foreign university. It cannot be a joint degree with a Brazilian institution;
- Lived more than 180 days outside Brazil per year during the last two years.
Can I apply if my undergraduate degree is not in Economics?
Applications with an undergraduate degree in Economics or a related field will receive priority, but other fields (e.g., Mathematics, Physics, etc.) will receive consideration. Students are expected to have a quantitative background at the level of, for example, the first four parts of “Mathematics for Economists” by Simon and Blume.
In which languages are classes conducted?
Classes are in Portuguese or English (at the professor's discretion). Evaluations’ questions or instructions can be provided in either language, but students can always choose to write answers in English.
Do foreign students also receive financial support?
We expect to provide scholarships that cover tuition and living expenses to all admitted students according to the CAPES scholarship values (https://www.gov.br/capes/en/access-to-information/actions-and-programs/scholarship-costs). Complementary financial aid might be available.
Do I need to translate my documents to Portuguese?
A document does not need to be translated if it is in English, Spanish, or Portuguese. If the document is in a different language, submit translations to English. All documents written by the applicant should be in English.
Do documents (i.e., transcripts) need to official or apostilled?
No. Applicants may submit unofficial documents (e.g., transcripts) at this stage of the application process. If admitted, the admission committee can require further documentation. Admission is contingent to provide such documentation.
Can I apply if I haven’t finished my undergraduate studies?
A student can apply as long as he expects to complete undergraduate studies by the start of classes, which is in early January. Undergraduate studies must be completed by the time the student starts the program.
When should I expect to learn admission results?
In 2024, the application deadline for foreign students is September 30th. We expect to communicate results approximately two weeks after this deadline.
Do you provide any guidance regarding recommendation letters or cover letter?
Regarding recommendation letters, they should be confidential, please ask letter writers to send them directly. Regarding the cover letters, the standard length is one page but it can be longer if the student needs to explain special circumstances.
Will the application deadline be the same every year?
We expect to move the application deadline to late August from 2025 onwards.
Is the program compatible with a part-time job?
No. Students are required to dedicate themselves full-time to the program.
